Investigation of a collision on E18 in Asker in Akershus county
Monday 13 May 2019 a passenger car drove into the back of a truck and trailer on E18 in Asker i Akershus county. The truck had a technical failure that led to a stop on the motorway, and it blocked the middle of three lanes in the westward direction. Both the driver and the passenger in the passenger car were killed in the accident.
During driving, a technical failure occurred on an air hose that supplies the trailers' brake system with compressed air. This resulted in the trailer's automatic braking system being engaged with maximum braking force and hence it was not possible for the driver to continue driving.
The shutdown occurred on a three-lane motorway with a speed limit of 90 km/h and a relatively high traffic volume. The truck had to stop in the middle lane, where the right lane was an access ramp.
The sequence of events is well documented, and the investigation will focus on which underlying conditions led to the automatic braking system on the trailer being engaged during driving. The car drivers' opportunities to avoid the accident will be highlighted. The possibilities for survival for the persons in the passenger car, and damage to the passenger car will also be investigated.
Status of the investigation
The investigation has focused on underlying conditions that made the automatic braking system on the trailer engage during driving. It has also emphasised the traffic control centre’s opportunity to inform exposed road users.
The investigation is in its final phase and has a high priority.
