Investigation of traffic accident on E6 at Kongsvoll in Oppdal municipality

The Accident Investigation Board Norway initiates an investigation into a traffic accident at Kongsvoll in Oppdal municipality, 25 October 2019.

Three people were killed instantly and one person was seriously injured when a passenger car collided with a cement truck. There were demanding driving conditions and heavy snowfall at the time of the accident.

A passenger car heading north on the E6 lost control, skidded, and came over in the opposite lane. The passenger car hit the cement truck in the front with its right side and was severely deformed as a result of the impact.

The investigation has so far shown that the contractor had implemented winter maintenance measures in the form of ploughing and salting in advance of the accident. However, the intensity of the weather with high winds and heavy snowfall gave demanding driving conditions at the scene of the accident.

The investigation will focus on documenting the course of events and uncovering the various factors that contributed to the accident. Both road- and vehicle-related factors will be investigated.

Operational and organizational conditions related to winter maintenance operation, the development of the weather and the crashworthiness of the vehicles will also be included in the investigation.
