Investigation of serious railway incident at Oslo central station

On Wednesday 8 May 2019, a locomotive derailed at Oslo S during a shunting operation. The derailment led to large material damage, pollution and delays.

During a shunting operation the locomotive pushed passenger wagons to be used as the night train to Bergen. The derailment took place at a set of points towards track 19 at Oslo S.

A buffer from wagon 4 had fallen off and was found at the set of points where the locomotive derailed. The buffer inflicted significant material damage on the infrastructure, several wagons and the locomotive. In addition, the accident caused a hole in a tank containing transformer oil and resulted in the oil spilling into the ground.

No one was injured in this incident.

The investigation will clarify the sequence of events and identify possible causal factors. Any underlying conditions that may have contributed to the accident will be mapped and analysed.
