Investigation of fire in locomotive at Sarpsborg station on Østfoldbanen

In the early hours of Saturday 2 october 2021, a fire broke out in locomotive EL 16 2206 of freight train 41978. The train was en route from Trelleborg in Sweden to Alnabru goods terminal in Oslo.

At Sarpsborg station, the driver noticed that a fire had broken out in the locomotive. The overhead contact line system was disconnected and earthed to allow Sarpsborg fire and chimney sweep service to start extinguishing the fire. The locomotive was then transported to Grorud repair shop in Oslo. 

No one was injured, but the engine and other electrical equipment sustained extensive damage.

The investigation will clarify the sequence of events and identify possible causal factors. Any underlying conditions that may have contributed to the incident will be mapped and analysed.
