Investigation of a marine casualty in international waters south of Iceland

Sunday 10 June 2018 a crew member lost his life in an occupational accident onboard the trawler Nordstar LHXV in international waters south of Iceland. The fishing vessel was on its way to Ålesund, Norway, for discharging.

A crew member collapsed during work in an enclosed space. The accident was quickly detected and he was rescued and given first aid treatment by other crew. The vessel contacted Norwegian and Icelandic rescue services and altered course towards Iceland to meet a rescue helicopter. When the helicopter arrived, more than two hours after the accident, the person was confirmed deceased.

Status of investigation

Some analysis work remains before the investigation can be completed. This has, among other things, a background in the workload associated with other extensive marine accidents.
